東京近郊の農地に残された空家を建て替え、郊外ならでは、木造ならではのおおらかな集住体をつくる試みである。敷地は里山風景が広がる恵まれた自然環境の中にある。崖下の1階部分をRCでつくりオーナーの別宅兼集会所とし、その他の部分は長屋形式の木造賃貸住戸とした。8世帯の居住者は、敷地内の里山や畑、集会所など周辺環境全体を生活の場として共有できる。建築と周辺環境との接触面を増やすため、建物ボリュームを室単位に分節して雁行配置し、ルーフテラス、専有ヤードといった屋外の生活スペースをふんだんにつくり出した。軒を大きく張り出した木造の大屋根がそれらを覆い、居住者全員で共有される風景をつくり出す。各住戸は隣接する住戸と階段で交差するメゾネットとなっており、様々な高さ、方角の風景を採り入れた、広がりのある内部空間を持つ。南北2棟にはさまれた屋外空間は、居住者同士の自然なコミュニケーションを誘発するため、占有部と共有部の境界を意図的に曖昧につくり込んでいる。竣工後、オーナーの指導のもと入居者が協働で農地を開墾して野菜づくりを始めるなど、都心では得られない、新しい共同生活の場がうまれつつある。

This is an attempt to rebuild a vacant farmhouse into a terraced house for rent, and create an easygoing residential community that can only be realized with a wooden structure in a suburban area. In order to increase the contact surface between the architecture and the surrounding environment, the architecture is divided into small volumes and arranged in an echelon form alongside with the extensive outdoor living space such as roof terraces and private yards. The wooden roof with wide eaves covers these spaces to create a shared landscape for all residents of this community. The exterior space between 2 buildings is created to lead up to spontaneous communications among the residents. Because of that, the borders between the private and common areas are intentionally made ambiguous. Since the completion of construction, the residents have started to develop jointly the farmland and to grow vegetables under the supervision of the owner. It is being a new type of communal living that can never be experienced in the city.
