長岡天満宮に隣接する長岡公園のリニューアルに伴い、多世代に開かれた新たな公園の中心施設として設計した休憩所である。様々な方向から訪れる利用者を自然に受け入れるべく、大らかな屋根の下に、諸機能をゆるやかに収めた建築とした。寄棟の軒先を斜めに切り落とした屋根形状により、周辺の風景とつながる開放性と、適度に囲われた安心感が同居する空間を実現している。この大屋根を、地場産の小径スギ製材を緻密に組み上げて架け渡した。支配的な棟梁を置かず、4m以下の短尺材を連結した「へ」の字型の連続梁を上下2層に重ね、継ぎ手を千鳥にずらすことで、互いに支え合わせる「レシプロカル構造」となっている。休憩室の建具を開放すれば、大屋根の下は心地よい風が吹き抜ける大きな半屋外空間となる。天窓から落ちる柔らかな自然光が、刻々と変化する「環境のムラ」を生み出し、人々は思い思いに快適な居場所を見つけることができる。公園で行われる様々な活動の拠点となり、その活動を見守るための大きな屋根の建築である。(安原幹)

Designed as a part of the Nagaoka Park renovation adjacent to Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine, this rest pavilion serves as a new community hub open to all generations. To naturally welcome visitors from various directions, the architecture features various functions loosely sheltered under a generous roof. The roof’s form, characterized by hip ends cut diagonally, achieves a balance between openness to the surrounding landscape and a sense of cozy enclosure. The expansive roof is constructed from local small-diameter cedar. Rather than using a dominant ridge beam, the structure adopts a “reciprocal system” consisting of chevron-shaped continuous beams layered in two tiers. By staggering the joints of short members (under 4m), the frame becomes self-supporting through mutual interdependence. Opening the sliding doors transforms the space into a vast semi-outdoor environment where breezes flow freely. Soft light from skylights creates a “rich unevenness” in the atmosphere, inviting visitors to find their own comfortable spot. This large-roofed structure stands as a focal point, quietly observing the diverse activities taking place within the park.(Motoki Yasuhara)
