吉村昭は三鷹に暮らし、徹底した史実調査に基づく記録小説を数多く世に送り出した。吉村が執筆活動を行っていた書斎を三鷹市が譲り受けて移築し、氏の業績を記念すると共に、地域の人々に開かれた公共空間に転換する計画である。井の頭公園の緑を望むことができる住宅地の一画の新しい敷地において私たちは、小さな平屋の書斎棟を主役に据え、その脇に展示・管理機能を持つ新棟を建てた。分棟配置としたのは、母屋と書斎を行き来しながら日常と創作の切り替えを行っていた吉村の生活を、来館者が追体験するためである。２棟の間には、吉村が書斎から眺めていた庭を再現した。来館者は新棟から始まる一連のシークエンスの中でまず、吉村の著作を中心とした展示とともに、書斎の建物と庭をガラスケースに入った展示物として鑑賞する。渡り廊下を経由して書斎棟に移動し、最後に「作家の頭脳」と言われた濃密な書斎の内部空間へ至る。窓からは、吉村が見ていた庭の風景が見える。訪れた人々が、吉村の豊穣な作品世界を内側から追体験し、語り合うための開かれた場所が生まれた。（安原幹）

 

Akira Yoshimura lived in Mitaka and wrote many historical novels based on thorough research. This project is moving his writing room building to a new location and converting it into a public space open to local people while commemorating his achievements. We placed the writing room building at the center of a new site and added a new exhibition and communication building. Between the two buildings, we recreated the garden that Yoshimura would have looked out over from the window. In the sequence that begins in the new building, visitors find the writing room building and the garden as the exhibition in the display case. They then move to the writing room building via an outdoor corridor and finally reach the intense space of the writing room, which was said to be the “brain of the author.” It is a place where visitors can experience the author’s rich literary universes from the inside and discuss them with each other.
